As a Black and bisexual American, June is a big month for me and my favorite people! It’s Pride Month (plus Juneteenth this week) and the US has officially erupted into technicolor fêtes, somber memorials, and every type of gathering in between. 

 in particular, seems to take over social media, as we post selfies from photogenic events while bitter culture wars brew in the comments. Against all that noise, sometimes the origin story can get lost. 

After all, Pride wasn’t always treated like the “gay holidays”. Today’s parties and parades are rooted in the Stonewall riots of 1969, when the patrons of a Greenwich Village gay bar called the Stonewall Inn fought back against a violent police raid — one of many such raids on New York’s gay bars in the 1960s. But this one lit the fuse for the modern queer liberation movement as we know it, led by organizers like

Though New Yorkers kicked things off, in recent decades Pride has gone global, with events from São Paulo to Taipei drawing millions throughout the year. The modern scale of public acceptance for queer and trans people is a stunning victory, but cops and corporations are eager to steal back the megaphone and reinforce the pre-Sixties status quo. Staying focused on the ongoing

For me, that looks like supporting the artistic expression of Black queer folks whenever I can. Money is a potent creative tool, and using mine to support the folks building the world I want to live in makes me feel meaningfully closer to getting there. In no particular order, these are five Black and LGBTQ+ creators in the sexuality industry who I’ve admired throughout my own career.

Sydni Deveraux is a pinup model, burlesque dancer and teacher, and erotic content creator based in San Francisco. Also known as ‘The Golden Glamazon’ (owing in part to her striking height of 6’2” inches, 

 in heels), she’s also an emcee, hosting events and live shows all over the US and beyond. I first discovered Sydni’s adult work on social media, where she’s wildly generous with posts of her gorgeous self.

That’s also how I learned of her new vocation: in addition to her modeling and performance work, 

. Early exposure to that work from the mystics in her family eventually guided her toward own astrology practice, and just from her offhand tweets on the subject, you can tell she’s a natural. She’s the first astrologer that I’ve ever started a small fund to make an appointment with, and not just because we’ve got the same big three! That’s sun, moon, and rising sign, by the way.

Shine Louise Houston | Pink & White Productions

Shine Louise Houston is an adult filmmaker and the founding director of Pink & White Productions. In case you’re new to these parts, Pink & White is the groundbreaking adult film studio behind queer porn labels like

 in 2020, piloting a streaming-centered model as necessitated by the pandemic.

 Good Vibrations, the pioneering producer was first inspired to start making the queer porn that her customers would struggle to find. Today, her work is renowned for centering the desires and experiences of marginalized people, and celebrating kink and BDSM as a valid and multifaceted form of sexual expression. It was essential viewing during my baby gay phase, and will be forever, honestly!

Raquel Savage is a prolific founder and creator in the adult industry. She’s a seasoned sex worker (with over a decade of experience with full-service sex work and online content creation), plus a super-producer of digital content, including erotic clips, sex education, a podcast, and more. Since the start of the pandemic, she’s become a certified sex therapist and launched her first 501(c)3 non-profit, 

, which address the health needs of Black queer sex workers and sexual assault survivors.

Raquel is the crowned queen of being the change she wants to see in the world, having founded three different organizations in total, including the multimedia production company 

, which makes high-quality Black queer and trans porn. As if that’s not enough, she’s also a Twitter tour-de-force, sharing droolworthy exclusive clips, dry wit, and essential education on sex 

 sex work. There’s simply no one out here doing it like her.

Caritia is an artist and bodyworker with over two decades of experience in the latter field. The 

 has long had a strong interest in integrated and holistic exploration of the body, and has studied movement practices such as kinbaku (also known as 

) and Butoh, an ancient form of Japanese dance. As her knowledge of these and other healing modalities grew, Caritia felt compelled to create a “knowledge sanctuary” in the form of
